Understanding GVM, Towing Capacity and GCM

In this instalment of the Caravan Industry Association of Australia's Total Towing Setups road safety video series, the key weights every caravanner needs to understand are broken down. GVM, or gross vehicle mass, is the maximum weight a car can reach fully loaded, including accessories, passengers, pets and the ball weight of the caravan.

Braked towing capacity, or BTC, is the maximum weight a vehicle manufacturer allows a car to tow, found in the owner's manual. GCM, or gross combination mass, sets the maximum combined weight of car and caravan together, meaning the caravan's weight must stay within the gap left after the car's own GVM is accounted for. Understanding all three ratings, and keeping combinations within them, is essential for safe and legal towing.
