How to Hook Up Your Caravan Safely

Caravan Industry Association of Australia1 min read

In this instalment of the Caravan Industry Association of Australia's Total Towing Setups road safety video series, the basic process for hooking up a tow vehicle and caravan is walked through step by step.

This covers lining up the coupling with the tow ball and lowering it into place with the jockey wheel, engaging the secondary lock, crossing and securing the safety chains with a D-shackle, and plugging in the seven-pin electrical lead for brake lights, tail lights and indicators.

A light safety check with a partner is recommended before finishing up, followed by confirming the car is in park with its handbrake on, releasing the caravan's handbrake and stowing the jockey wheel. Once each step is checked off, the setup is ready to safely hit the road.
